Key Learning Areas (KLAs)

English classes at Lurnea IEC are organised according to students’ English language proficiency, learning needs and, where appropriate, age.

Students progress through four English language levels: Foundation, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Lessons focus on developing skills in reading and responding, writing, viewing, listening and speaking.

Foundation students develop basic vocabulary, sentence structures, literacy and classroom language. As students progress through the levels, they develop their English through a range of text types, including descriptions, recounts, narratives, expositions, poetry and reviews.

Mathematics develops students’ mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding while building the language of mathematics needed for learning in an Australian high school.

Students develop skills across number and algebra, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability, and working mathematically.

Lessons are designed to meet students’ individual needs and abilities while building confidence and enjoyment in mathematics. Students also develop practical skills, including using scientific calculators and geometry equipment.

Science is practical, engaging and student-centred, with a strong focus on developing scientific literacy.

Students explore key concepts across biology, physics and chemistry while developing the English language needed to participate confidently in science learning.

Students develop skills in scientific inquiry, research, higher-order thinking, information reports, examination techniques and oral presentations. These skills support students as they transition to mainstream high school and further study.

Computer Studies develops students’ digital literacy and English language skills, preparing them for learning, communication and everyday life in Australia.

Students develop practical skills using a range of computer programs and digital technologies, including word processing, research, presentations and online tools. They also learn to use technology safely, responsibly and effectively.

Through practical activities, students build their problem-solving, communication and ICT skills, supporting a successful transition to mainstream high school.

History develops students’ understanding of the past while building the English language and literacy skills needed for learning in mainstream high school.

Students explore a range of historical topics and develop skills in research, reading, writing, interpreting sources and communicating ideas.

Lessons are adapted to support students’ English language development while maintaining high expectations and building confidence as independent learners.

Geography combines geographical knowledge and skills with English language development.

Students explore geographical topics and issues relating to Australia and the world, while developing skills in mapping, data interpretation, research, ICT and visual literacy.

Students are encouraged to think critically, discuss geographical issues and communicate their ideas and opinions with confidence.

Visual Arts combines creative expression, practical art making and English language development.

Students explore a range of art forms, including drawing, painting, collage, colour, digital media and 3D art. They develop confidence using art and design vocabulary while learning to communicate ideas through visual forms.

Students are encouraged to experiment, respond to artworks and develop their visual literacy and creativity.

PDHPE supports students to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for healthy, active and positive lives.

Students participate in a range of sports, games and physical activities while developing skills in communication, teamwork, decision-making and problem-solving.

Topics include personal hygiene, healthy food choices, road and water safety, healthy relationships, active lifestyles, anti-bullying and wellbeing.

Music provides students with opportunities to explore, create and perform music while developing their English language and communication skills.

Students develop their understanding of rhythm, melody, instruments and musical vocabulary through practical activities, listening and performance.

Music encourages students to build confidence, creativity, collaboration and self-expression while exploring a range of musical styles and cultures.
