The Intensive English Centre was first established at Busby High School in 1986. In 1993, the centre moved to Lurnea High School and since then, the centre has enrolled approximately 5000 students. We provide English instruction to students from 11 to 18 years old who have little or no knowledge of the English language but wish to continue their schooling in High School or TAFE. Students who qualify to enrol can be non-English speaking migrants, refugees or temporary residents.
The teachers who teach in the Intensive English Centre aim to provide a caring and enjoyable learning atmosphere to enable students to develop to their full potential academically, physically and creatively. Support for students from different language backgrounds in provided by Learning Support Officers who speak languages which may include Arabic, Assyrian, Kurdish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Farsi, Croatian, Serbian, Samoan and Spanish.
